Dear Fellow South Africans

It is with regret that my wife, kids and I have to go back to South Africa; things just didn't work out for us here. We hope it is just a temporary measure and that we will be back after a year or so.

Before we go we would like to tell the group about a very special person that we very fortunately met here. His name is Herman Roodt. Besides the fact that Herman covered all our insurance needs, he also offered very sound general advice that helped us here in New Zealand. Herman, I can honestly say, always did more than the average insurance person that I ever knew.

He is a genuine, honest, thoughtful and compassionate person, some one that I can say many of us need when coming into a new country. He offers very solid advice and gives off a strong sense of stability.

My wife and I would like to highly recommend Herman to anyone looking for insurance with an extra-added interest that I doubt you will get anywhere else.

Thank you Herman for all your help.

Kind Regards.

To all my fellow Jaapies out there.

Like most of you, I too decided one day that the many "push factors" out of South Africa of which we are all aware, started to by far outweigh all the "pull factors" of the Land of the Long White Cloud.

That said ... the Land of the Long White Cloud is certainly not the land of milk and honey, when you arrive, still jobless and suddenly realise you don't have a network anymore, you can't pull strings to make things happen, even the life-line of a telephone call home warrants a second thought and koeksisters and pap just don't taste the same.

For 5 months, I did what I knew best as a seasoned HR professional of 12 years to market myself to companies, recruitment agencies and via the internet, all to no avail. I watched and waited as literally hundreds of applications went out, disappearing into cyberspace, never to be heard from again. I don't need to tell you what that does to your psyche.

A chance visit to the local South African Caffee in Browns Bay resulted in a thing of rare value being unearthed ... a business card for one, Herman Roodt. "Call him" they said "he knows EVERYONE." Boy oh boy, were they right! During one very hectic meeting lasting an hour, he juggled numerous phone calls from clients, listened to my tales of woe, flicked through his database, made a few calls and armed with 6 names to contact, I was on my way.

I am still searching for that elusive job, but by the end of that week I have had two information sharing meetings with fellow South Africans, transformed my CV and had one telephone interview. Now thanks to a new network, they too are following up on opportunities suitable for me and within 24 hours of sending out my "new CV", I have been contacted by an agent and put forward for 2 great jobs. I am again filled with hope for 2004!!

Not many people will answer a stranger’s cry for help … Herman Roodt's generosity with his time and contacts have done this for me and many others. Despite leaving South Africa with a list of all the bad and negative things in my heart and mind, I am truly proud now to be a member of the South African community in the Land of the Long White Cloud.
